Backup Power Information for Zirrus Customers

If your home phone service is provided by our state-of-the-art fiber optic network, it requires electric power to operate. To avoid a disruption of home phone service during a power outage, and to maintain the ability to connect to 911 emergency services, Yadkin Valley Telephone Membership Corporation d/b/a Zirrus provides a battery backup.

Under normal conditions (no power outage), the backup battery provides power to your Network Interface Device (NID) so that it can function. To accomplish this, the backup battery must be plugged into a standard outlet in your home. If the outlet the backup battery is plugged in to is controlled by a wall switch, please make sure this switch is always in the "On” position. In the event of a power outage, the backup battery will automatically begin to supply battery power to your NID to provide phone service. Your backup battery does not provide power to any services other than your home phone. Home security systems, medical monitoring devices, routers and other equipment will not operate on a home phone backup battery.

The backup batteries provided by Zirrus are expected to operate at least 8 hours on standby power.

Without a backup power source, your phone service, including your ability to dial 911, may not function during a power outage. With a back-up battery, your talk time during a power outage may be limited by multiple factors, including the condition of the battery at the time of the outage.
